H’mong Mountain Retreat

Those seeking to relax in stunning surroundings may not find what they’re looking for in busy Sapa town, but out of town accommodation, like H’mong Mountain Retreat, which overlooks the breathtaking Muong Hoa valley, provides a welcome alternative. Enjoy sunset on top of Ham Rong Mountain, Sapa

You don't get a view like that from many guest houses.
A little bit of a view.
The retreat consists of an 85-year-old stilt house, which was transported to its current location from a small village 150 kilometres northeast of Sapa, a H’mong family house, also relocated and reconstructed, and five rammed-earth bungalows. The buildings are dotted around terraced paddy, and all have amazing views — so long as it’s not foggy, which does happen. Sapa Vietnam tours

Guest accommodation is in either the bungalows or the H’mong house, which contains two bedrooms and a living area. The bungalows are about as basic as it gets in terms of furnishings, containing a mattress with bedding, a mosquito net, a heater, a lamp and a small table. But put aside any visions of budget beach huts or $4 a night shacks — one in Don Dhet springs to mind — because these are as classy as a rammed earth bungalow can be: the bedding is excellent quality cotton, with thick duvets perfect for chilly Sapa nights, towels are white and fluffy, a tastefully designed lamp sits in the corner and fruit and bottled water are supplied. There’s even a knife to cut the fruit with, although I wondered momentarily whether it was for attacking any creepy crawlies that wandered in. Note: the mosquito net is a good idea, even in winter. Jasmine Cruise – Halong Bay

The highlight of the rooms are the terraces, which extend out over the rice fields providing near uninterrupted views of the valley below. You’ll have to sit on the floor, as no seating is provided, but you’ll soon forget about that as you enjoy the scenery with a cold can of beer.

The H’mong House is a good alternative for groups or families. Constructed from a mixture of clay walls, palm leaf thatching and palm tree wood flooring, it houses up to four people in two bedrooms. The rooms are bigger than the bungalows but otherwise the same style. It doesn’t feel quite as adventurous as the bungalows but still has great views.

One important thing to note is that neither the bungalows nor the H’mong House have en suite bathrooms. The two modern bathrooms are located in the main stilt house, thereby necessitating a few minutes’ walk along a narrow stoney path between rice fields from your room. Not such an issue during the day when it’s dry, but not the most pleasant experience on a rainy night. Fortunately, lamps are provided.

You won't want to trek anywhere.
You won’t want to trek anywhere.
Meals are taken in the main stilt house, which is also a great place to chill out with a book or play cards — either on the ground floor, with better views, or the upper floor. The furnishings are stunning, created from local materials and designed by co-owner Dinh Khac Tiep, and for chilly days and nights a large coal fire can be lit. Cookery classes are held in the main house — I’ve taken a few cookery classes around Asia and this has to have the best view and the food’s great too (ed’s note: I’ll put it up at number one with Bali Asli in Bali then!).

Dinner is a set vegetarian menu, which may not be to everyone’s taste and although plentiful and warming doesn’t quite hit the spot after a day of trekking. It also adds another US$15 per person to the bill, including a drink, but it’s tasty and there’s not a lot of choice unless you want to trek back into Sapa. Additional drinks are available at reasonable prices.

I may have referenced $4 huts earlier, but it’s not only the quality of the bungalows that bear no resemblance — the prices don’t either. At US$59 per night for a bungalow, including breakfast, this is not budget. You are, however, getting not just a room but an experience as well.

H’mong Mountain Retreat is part of the Tet Lifestyle Collection, a company that takes its responsibility to the local communities in which it operates seriously, with all of its staff either underprivileged youth or ethnic minorities. It also works closely with the local communities to promote the increase of ethnic minority living standards in education and basic health care and a percentage of profits go towards the Mac Ha School.

Give him a hand.
Give him a hand.
Treks and other activities can be organised or you can set out yourself from the retreat for a walk down into the valley. Transfers from Sapa town are provided but if you want to travel back and forth you’ll either need to rent a bike or pay extra.

H’mong Mountain Retreat will suit those looking to get away from it all and spend some quality time with friends or a good book in a unique location, or exploring the local area. It’s not ideal if you want to spend your evenings shopping or boozing in Sapa town, or place an en suite bathroom high on your list of requirements.

Ha Long Bay, Son Doong cave named among the top 10 of the most beautiful places

According to the global travel website GlobalGrasshopper, Son Doong Cave and Ha Long bay in Vietnam has recently listed among 10 of the most beautiful places to visit on the planet.
In the list for 2015, Ha Long Bay in northern Quang Ninh province ranked third while the Son Doong cave in central Quang Binh province, in the seventh place. Halong bay tours
Situated in the North-East region of Vietnam, Halong Bay is a bay in the Gulf of Tonkin comprised of regions of Halong City, the township of Cam Pha, and a part of the island district of Van Don. Halong Bay borders Cat Ba Island in the southwest, the East Sea in the east, and the mainland, creating a 120 km coastline.
The majority of these land masses have not been touched by humans and have managed to retain their beauty since their creation. It is this that enabled it to be listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, GlobalGrasshpper said.best Luxury Cruises on Halong Bay

Meanwhile, located approximately 500km south of Hanoi, the Son Doong cave, the largest in the world, is more than 200m wide, 150m high, and about 9km long. It houses a jungle and a river, and could fit a 40-storey skyscraper within its walls. Centre Vietnam tours
For centuries, men have mulled upon the existence of hollow Earth – a theory that states that the Earth is hollow. If hollow Earth did exist, than the Son Doong cave would be a testament to its existence. The cave is so large that humans exploring them would look like ants. The Son Doong cave is evidence of the world’s beauty, inside and out, the website said.

In the island, some settings are still preserved including the stone-paved road to the beach (often called the Slave Pier), the prisons.

Khau Vai Love Market

Khau Vai commune, located in Meo Vac district, the northernmost province of Ha Giang, is home to ethnic minority groups of Giay, Nung and Muong. The love market festival is held on lunar March 26th and 27th with the participation of a large number of locals. The festival features food and drink culture, song performances and folk games. Ethnic costumes, jewelery, ethnic musical instruments, culture and art publications are on display at the market, reflecting activities of the local people.

Sapa tour – Unique to Vietnam

The primary Khau Vai Love Market

It can be said that the beauty & power of love is the basic factor to maintain the existence of Khau Vai love market for such a long time. In the market area, there are two temples called Ong and Ba (Mr and Mrs) temples. The story concerning these temples tells that, once upon a time, there was a boy and a girl born from two different places of the Dong Van Plateau. Since forbidden to get married by the two families, they, side by side, decided to leave home to come and settle down together in Khau Vai, a prosperous land with green plants. In honor of their merits in cultivating the wild land into a rich land, the local people built the two temples to worship them.

Khau Vai Love Market
Khau Vai Love Market

Another local myth tells the story of a young couple from different tribes who fell in love with each other. The girls belonged to the Giay group and the boy to the Nung group. The girl was so beautiful that her tribe did not want to let her get married with any man from another tribes. Consequently, violent conflict arose between the two tribes. To stop the blood shedding, the two lovers sorrowfully decided to part. However, they planned to meet once a year on that day, lunar March 27th. The place where they used to meet is Khau Vai, which thereafter became a meeting place for all those in love.

7 hotels in Sapa having the best view

Since then, on every lunar March 27th, Khau Vai has attracted couples of different ages, including those who seek partners for the first time. Yet, most of them are those who love each other very much but cannot marry because of different reasons. On the day when the market session takes place, it is likely that both the wife and her husband together go to the market but they look for their own partners to share emotions. If one of them has to stay at home, he or she is not jealous because the dating at the marketplace is only a temporary feeling exchange, which has no negative influences on real life.

Activities

The first day of the market session is for the ceremony to turn into the new calendar period. On this day, at a selected hour, people take a bath and put on their best clothes in anticipation of the New Year. They bring incense, lamps, flowers and fruits to a pagoda where they join the great calendar-receiving ceremony. Then the official ceremony is carried out inside the sanctuary. After that, every participant prays to the Buddha and chant prayers for a happy new year. Young persons walk out to the pagoda yard and join in fun activities till late at night.

The second day is for the ceremony to offer boiled rice and heap up a sandy mountain. Every Khmer family cooks rice and offers it to Buddhist monks at the pagoda in early morning and at noon. In the afternoon, people start to heap up a sandy mountain for seeking happiness and luck. They make small mountains in eight directions and one in the middle reflects the universe. This custom originates from an age-old legend. It displays people’s aspirations for rain.

On the third day of the market, there comes the ceremony to wash the Buddha’s statue and Buddhist monks. In the afternoon, they burn incense, offer sacrifices and use scented water to wash the statue in order to pay tribute and gratitude to the Buddha. This is also to get rid of the old year’s misfortunes and wish all the best for the New Year. After that, people return to their house and wash the Buddha’s statue at home. They offer dishes, confectionery and fruits to ask for happiness for their parents and grandparents and being forgiven for their mistakes made in the previous year.

The Chinese come to the market with various commodities, including shoes and clothing.
